Distance Education FAQ

Who is a Distance Education Patron?

Distance education patrons live outside of Chittenden County, do not come to campus at all, are enrolled in either online or offsite University of Vermont classes or only come to campus monthly.

Many Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery services are available for faculty on sabbatical leave, as well as for currently enrolled students who are away from campus for internships, independent study projects, semesters abroad, or doctoral research.

Additional resources can be found on the Services for Off-Campus Students page.

What type of material can I request for Distance Education?

If you're outside of the U.S.?

Only articles and book chapters can be ordered. We are unable to mail books, theses, or media out of the country.

Material not owned by the UVM Libraries will be ordered through Interlibrary Loan and then scanned; a PDF will be sent to your ILLiad account. If you're in the U.S.? Any material that is owned by the UVM Libraries may be requested. Non-circulating materials are handled on a case-by-case basis. The ILL Dept. will attempt to borrow material not owned by the UVM Libraries.

How do I order material?

Place requests using your ILLiad account.

Important: Any material that is owned by the UVM Libraries may be requested. Non-circulating materials are handled on a case-by-case basis. The ILL Dept. will attempt to borrow material not owned by the UVM Libraries.

How long does it take for material to arrive?

PDFs of articles and book chapters will be sent to you electronically, usually within 2-5 days. You'll receive an email when the article is ready for you to view. Log in to your ILLiad account to access the article.

If a book is owned by the UVM Libraries and is available, we will check it out to your library account and mail it to you via first class mail. It should arrive within 3-7 days depending on where you are in the U.S.

If a book must be ordered through ILL, it usually takes 1-3 weeks for our department to receive it; then we will mail it to you.

Obscure publications can take longer to obtain.

You can log in to your ILLiad account to check the status of any of your requests.

Can material be renewed?

You may renew any regularly circulating item from UVM libraries, provided another borrower has not placed a hold or recall on it.

You can renew your books online at the Patron Information Page, as long as none of your books are overdue.

Renewal requests for Interlibrary Loan material must be placed through your ILLiad account. Renewals are at the discretion of the lending library. If a book indicates "NO RENEWALS" on the information band then it cannot be renewed and must be used within the allotted time.

Is there a charge for this service?

Currently, there is no fee for this service.

How do I return the materials that I borrowed?

UVM and ILL material are-------- sent to you in a canvas mailer-bag with return postage paid. Simply re-use the same mailer bag and slide the pre-paid postage label into the address slot on the bag.
