Troubleshoot Printing Problems

Are you struggling to print a document? Here are a few steps to help you avoid printing problems.

Plan to print your document early

If many people are trying to print at the same time, everything gets slowed down.

Utilize other printers if one location is busy.

Printers are available at Howe Library, Dana Health Sciences Library, Silver Special Collections Library, Davis Center (1st floor), Waterman Print and Mail Center or your department, if they offer printing. Different locations may use a different printing process.

Save the document to your device before printing

The printers sometimes have problems printing documents from email, Google Docs and other online locations.

Beware of odd paper sizes

  • Images (.jpeg, .gif, etc.) often come in odd sizes. Consider pasting an image into a Word or PDF document before printing.
  • Howe Library printers can print 8 1/2" x 11", 8 1/2" x 14, or 11" x 17" documents.
  • Ask for 8 1/2" x 14" or 11" 17" paper at the library Circulation Desk prior to printing as they are not loaded into the printers.
  • If you need a different paper size, contact the UVM Print and Mail Center.

Print a complicated document to PDF, then print the resulting PDF

If a document has a mix of text, graphics, charts and tables, it can be difficult for the printer to render it. To Print to PDF, after you choose "Print", pick "Print to PDF" as the destination, rather than a specific printer.

Unsupported Card Type

If you get an "unsupported card type" message:

  • Your card may be expired. You can purchase a Cat$cratch card from the cbord machines around campus.
  • If you took a gap semester you may need to go to the CATcard office to have your card updated.
  • For other issues, send an email to library.systems@uvm.edu with the following information:
    • First name
    • Last name
    • NetID
    • Last 9 digits of the barcode on your ID. If you don't have a barcode, just let us know you have no barcode. If you only have a digital CATcard, you may not have a barcode.
