Date:
Monday, April 6, 2020
A hand removing an ebook reader from a shelf full of printed booksDuring the COVID-19 crisis, many publishers are temporarily opening up access to their online research resources. The UVM Libraries are working to provide trials to select resources and to expand access to some of our current online holdings for UVM affiliates. You’ll find some highlights, below.

You can also see a full list, curated by Information & Instruction Services librarians, along with some useful remote access tips. You must be logged in with your NetID and password to access resources that are limited to UVM affiliates.

The Dana Medical Library has a useful guide showcasing free medical resources, including COVID-19 resources.

The UVM Libraries hold membership in this international consortium focused on providing access to primary source research collections. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Center for Research Libraries is negotiating additional access to key primary source collections for its members. These include archives of magazines such as Ebony, Life, Forbes, The Nation, The National Review, and many others, as well as article indexes and research databases. You can find a complete list here, and can also access individual titles via our Temporarily Free and Expanded Collections research guide.

Open Access

These resources are not limited to UVM-affiliates and can be accessed by all.

The Internet Archive announced that in response to COVID-19, it “will suspend waitlists for the 1.4 million (and growing) books in our lending library by creating a National Emergency Library to serve the nation’s displaced learners.” Although this digital library is not without controversy, it provides surrogate access to many books shuttered behind the doors of closed libraries, including our own. The University of Vermont Libraries join a growing list of individuals and institutions in supporting the, “Internet Archive’s use of Fair Use to eliminate waitlists for the books it lends to users through the latter of June 30, 2020, or the end of the US national emergency.” [Visit https://archive.org/details/nationalemergencylibrary to access the emergency library.]
