Marsh Room, Billings Library
University of Vermont
David Lustgarten, associate professor in the Division of Communication and Creative Media at Champlain College, will help celebrate the opening of the Jack and Shirley Silver Special Collections Library with his presentation, "A Book, a Building, and the Future of Our World."
The exciting move of UVM’s Special Collections, including the core of its original library—the George Perkins Marsh collection purchased by Frederick Billings for the University—to its original home in the Billings Library prompts, for the student of art and architectural history, reflection on a very special relation between some of those volumes and the building itself. Such contemplation of these old and seemingly now irrelevant historic artifacts reveals, quite surprisingly, a subtle yet powerful message for us in the present day.
David Lustgarten earned a BFA in art and design at the Cooper Union in New York City with scholarship study at Basel Kunstgewerbeschule, Switzerland. He holds an MFA in interdisciplinary art from Goddard College. After an 18-year graphic design career he began teaching at Champlain College, joining the full-time faculty in 2000 and later directing the graphic design program there. In 2015, David became a Companion of the Guild of St George, the charitable organization founded by John Ruskin in 1871 to support creative endeavor within sustainable community. David continues research centered on Arts & Crafts sensibility as inspired by Ruskin through William Morris and the many like-minded craftspersons, designers and architects descendant from him.
The lecture is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Silver Special Collections at uvmsc@uvm.edu or (802) 656-2138.
