Abstract:
Our social and emotional development - kno'wingourselves and playing well with others - is central to our success in school, at work, and in leading fulfilling lives. This perspective has been broadly accepted by educators of children and - increasingly - those of adults. As a self-defense teacher and aikido practitioner, I have seen and experienced the social and emotional learning potential of noncompetitive physical training in a reflective, supportive environment. This Scholarly Personal Narrative explores and martial artist. It embraces and prioritizes the value of reflective story; the truths to be found in the body; and the need to cultivate caring, ethical communites.
