Abstract:
This study examined the relation among ADHO subtypes, cognitive deficits, sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT), and biased self-perceptions of competence. Participants included a combined group of children with ADHD, Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Type and children with ADHD, combined Type (N=62), a group of children with ADHD, Predominantly Inattentive Type (N=26), and a Control group (N=27). Groups were compared on each set of variables using analyses of variance. The relation of cognitive deficits to biased self-perceptions of academic and social competence was then tested in regression. Finally, hierarchical regressions were used to examine whether SCT moderated the relation between cognitive deficits and bias. Results demonstrated significant differences by subtype on specific cognitive factors, SCT symptoms, and bias in self-perceptions. Specific cognitive factors also emerged as significant predictors of bias; the type of cognitive factor varied by competence domain. Lastly, SCT did not emerge as a significant predictor of the relation between cognitive deficits and bias. Clinical implications as well as limitations of this study are discussed.
