Abstract:
This thesis is an examination ofthe lives and work of two famed Soviet dissidents, Andrei Sakharov and AleksandrSolzhenitsyn, as well as the development of dissidence in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s in the Soviet Union. Solzhenitsyn and Sakharov are often considered wholly representative of Soviet dissidence. In reality, a much more complicated and varied culture of dissent existed in the thirty years that preceeded the fall of Communism.
