Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to investigate the need for the role of psychiatric nurse practitioners in Jamaica. This research project is a two part assessment and includes a survey and a needs assessment calculation. The survey reflects the opinions of individuals currently working in the Jamaican mental health system. The results of this survey is used as a part of the needs assessment calculation in addition to the guidelines presented by the World Health Organization Human Resources and Training in Mental Health Manual. This data reflects the needs as recommended by international guidelines as well as the current perceived need for the role. The study highlights factors affecting the development of the role that could be addressed. The primary objective of the results of this study is to increasing staff for mental health settings, by increasing the numbers of psychiatric nurse practitioners.
