Abstract:
Other strains of mice were also analyzed for NKT cell numbers in the liver. There was widespread variation of the numbers of NKT cells among the fifteen strains screened. There was more than a 150-fold difference between the BUB/BnJ and the LG/J strains. These data also demonstrate that the variation in NKT cell nurnber can predict further downstream effects of NKT cell activation, such as liver pathology. Forty-eight hours after activation, livers of B6 mice had more areas of necrosis than the livers of Balb/cJ mice. These results revealed that the varying NKT cell number and function is genetically influenced. Consequently, this variation also affects NKT-cell mediated disease.
