Abstract:
The concepts of Mattering, Mindfulness, and Moral Conversation while not specifically related to the practice of teaching are certainly not strangers to the classroom. In this thesis their roles individually and as a cohesive group will be apparent. The lines between them are foggy; they easily bump and flow into each other regardless of the subject matter. These concepts have dramatically impacted this teacher, radiation therapist, student, partner, and friend. Drawing on personal experience, and scholarship I will demonstrate their capacity to influence students and teachers. Many times teachers are experts in a specific field of study; they may well use sound teaching principles, but still feel as though they are not reaching their students as deeply or completely as they hope. Mattering, Mindfulness, and Moral Conversation are irrevocably related for me. Through Mattering our students and patients have the sense that we truly care about their lives, concerns and fears. Being present or Mindful offers the opportunity to experience their lives fully and rewardingly. Moral Conversation provides the framework to listen and understand our students' and patients' hopes, fears and ideas without fear of judgment or reprisal. I hope to provide insight for others to feel that they may enhance their student and patient interactions by incorporating these simple yet powerful concepts into their clinic or classroom.
