Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative research project was to explore elementary physical education teachers' perceptions surrounding the use of assessment in their classrooms. Physical education in Vermont is evolving as increased accountability is having a pronounced affect on public education today. Assessment is the avenue in which educators are being held more accountable. The participants of this research study shared their personal views on the importance of assessment in elementary physical education. Both the perceived benefits and negatives of assessment are examined. The results of this study will also probe what the participants perceive their role is in terms of accountability within their schools. The parents and administrators opinions of assessments performed in physical education will be explored through the teachers' lenses. Also discussed are the participants' reactions to the changes that are happening within the profession at the state level.
