Abstract:
This qualitative study explores the ways in which six mothers in a semi-rural Vermont town experience a sense of belonging in their multifaceted lives. Three elements the women identified that help develop and maintain a sense of belonging in their lives are people, place and purpose. In addition, noticing times of not feeling a sense of belonging also provides perspective. These elements emerge from the women's definitions and descriptions of their experiences. The people aspect of belonging includes connections with friends, family and partners. The geographical sense of belonging focuses on sense of place and one's connection with nature, community and region. The sense of purpose aspect of belonging touches on roles, work, activities, and a larger sense of purpose in one's life. Juxtaposed with times of not feeling a sense of belonging, the women in this qualitative study defined and explored the complexities of their sense of belonging. The women's interviews provide a framework for tending to one's sense of belonging. Combining the different elements helps create a whole picture of how to build belonging in one's life and community. This study gives insight into the impact of belonging on personal wellness, family development and community/organizational planning.
