Abstract:
This thesis seeks to demonstrate that the criterion of change serves to isolate those particulars of plot and language which are important for understanding how Euripides constructed his characters. By asking how the story of the character changes, how the sympathy of the audience towards the character changes, how the decisions of the character change, and how identifiable aspects of the character change from play to play, the criterion of change is applied to the plays of Euripides, both extant and fragmentary, in which Theseus, Hecuba, or Orestes have a role.
