Raul Hilberg, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Vermont, distinguished genocide historian and author of the seminal work "The Destruction of the European Jews." Born in Vienna in 1926, Hilberg emigrated to the United States in 1939 and joined the U.S. Army in 1944. Hilberg was awarded the Geschwister Scholl Prize for the German edition of his 2001 book, Sources of Holocaust Research. He passed away in August 2007.
