- Grete Stern and Ellen Rosenberg Auerbach met in Berlin in the 1920's during the Weimar Republic, when these ''new woman'' could--for the first time--move to the city, live alone, and not be considered prostitutes. In 1929, they opened their own advertising photography studio and quickly built a reputation for their unconventional depictions of women. While the two pioneers are deeply serious about their endeavors, they attribute their success to their talent, not avant-garde posing. They simply took advantage of living in a breakthrough era centered on the Bauhaus, with its adventurous and functional melding of art, science, and technology.
