How does one build a movement for minority rights, especially gay rights, in a country without a democratic tradition? Moscow activist Nikolai Alekseev's crusade is made all the more difficult by the forces arrayed against him, from narrow-focus neo-nationalists to Mayor Luzhkov and Prime Minister Putin; from vehement, violent homophobes to the Russian Orthodox Church. Even the publisher of Russia's lone gay magazine, KWIR, opposes Alekseev's Gay Pride campaign. "It makes our life much tougher," he explains, "and we don't see any profits out of this parade." Jochen Hick's slyly constructed documentary gradually reveals the contradictory nature of queer life in Moscow. A thriving gay dance-club scene and a public park where lesbians kibitz and kiss indicate a small subculture that's generally tolerated. But gay bashings and firings without cause are sufficiently prevalent to keep most people in the closet to everyone outside their circle of friends. One consequence is that publicized, organized marches are less effective at drawing crowds of gays and lesbians than attracting haters of all stripes.

Economics of happiness
A documentary film about economic localization, a powerful strategy that can help heal our world from crisis -- our ecosystems, our societies, and ourselves. "The Economic of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. As governments and big business continue to push for 'growth' in the form of increased global trade, we're seeing an increase in climate chaos, senseless war, fundamentalism, financial volatility, income inequality, and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, people around the world are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of both trade and finance. And, far from the old institutions of power, communities are coming together to re-build more human-scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm -- an economics of localization."--Container.

Economies of being environmentally conscious
The first season of this series examines the economies of being environmentally conscious in green building design. The first program, The green apple, uses New York City, particularly One Bryant Park and the Solaire, to demonstrates how the ubiquitous skyscraper can be a model of environmental responsibility. The second episode, Green for all, features architect and activist Sergio Palleroni as he works to provide design solutions to regions suffering from social and humanitarian crises. Shows projects in East Austin, Tex. and with the Yaqui Indians in Mexico where architecture students are helping residents build low-cost, environmentally-friendly homes using local materials. The third program, The green machine, follows Mayor Richard M. Daley as he strives to make Chicago "the greenest city in America" with numerous LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)-certified buildings, a solar-powered public transportation system, and many green roofs, including one on Chicago's City Hall. The fourth episode, Gray to green, takes the notion of the three R's (reduce, reuse, recycle) to grand proportions by turning Boston's "Big Dig" steel and concrete waste into spectacular residential design. The fifth program, China : from red to green? depicts a rapidly urbanizing country at its tipping point and finds a sustainable solution in Steven Holl's Beijing project, which will have the largest geothermal heating/cooling and greywater recycling system in the world upon completion. The sixth program, Deeper shades of green, presents three visionaries who are changing the face of architecture and environmentalism and features some of their projects. Focuses on Ken Yeang and his "bio-climatic" National Library of Singapore, Werner Sobek and R128, his energy-efficient, steel and glass box house, and William McDonough and his model sustainable village of Huangbaiyu, China.

Eight Cultures, One Fight
Documents how indigenous peoples stand up for their traditional sacred lands in defense of cultural survival, human rights and the environment. Volume 1: Pilgrims and tourists: "Around the world, indigenous communities stand in the way of government megaprojects. In the Russian republic of Altai, people create their own mountain parks to rein in tourism and resist a gas pipeline that would cut through a World Heritage Site. In Northern California, Winnemem Wintu girls grind herbs on a sacred rock, as elders protest government plans to enlarge one of the West's biggest dams and forever submerge this touchstone of a tribe." Volume 2: Profit and loss: From Papua New Guinea rainforests to Canada's tar sands, Profit and Loss exposes industrial threats to native peoples' health, livelihood and cultural survival. In Papua New Guinea, a Chinese government owned nickel mine has violently relocated villagers to a taboo sacred mountain, built a new pipeline and refinery on contested clan land, and is dumping mining waste into the sea. In Alberta, Canada, First nations people are facing rare cancers as their hunting grounds are stripmined. Volume 3: Fire and ice: : "From Ethiopia to Peru, indigenous customs protect biodiversity on sacred lands under pressure from religious conflicts and climate change. In the Gamo Highlands of Ethiopia, scientists confirm the benefits of traditional stewardship/indigenous customs that protect biodiversity, even as elders witness the decline of spiritual practices that have long protected trees, meadows and mountains. Tensions with evangelical Christians over a sacred meadow erupt into a riot. In the Peruvian Andes, the Q'eros, on a pilgrimage to a revered glacier, are driven from their ritual site by intolerant Catholics. Q'eros potato farmers face a more ominous foe: global warming is melting glaciers, their water source. Andes farmers, scientists and visiting Ethiopians struggle to adapt indigenous agriculture to the changing climate." Volume 4: Islands of sanctuary: "Native Hawaiians and Aboriginal Australians resist threats to their sacred places in a growing international movement to defend human rights and protect the environment. In Australia's Northern Territory, Aboriginal clans maintain Indigenous Protected Areas and resist the temptation and destructive effects of a mining boom. In Hawaii, indigenous ecological and spiritual practices are used to restore the sacred island of Kahoolawe after 50 years of military use as a bombing range." http://standingonsacredground.org/learn-more/synopses

Encountering Eloyi
"Of all the faith-healing churches in Botswana, Eloyi is the most controversial. Sensational stories in newspapers and on television have made Eloyi notorious for so-called witch-busting and for exorcising demons. Known as tokoloshi, they appear like a nightmare image of an overwhelming consumer society. While attacking traditional ritual as Satan's work, Eloyi brings back, in a Christian or even more remarkably Old Testament guise, many old Tswana practices. Rarely in the ritual of other churches is empathy for others' and their mortal frailty so powerfully realised as in this Apostolic church during a séance. The film shows the impact of such empathy and the demonic in the lives of a childless couple, Martha and Njebe, originally from the countryside and now settled in Botswana's capital city. After a long quest for healing by traditional doctors and gynaecological treatment by Western hospitals, Martha chooses to seek help from Eloyi. Her choice widens the gulf between Eloyi's city branch and its village headquarters, between the church's city bishop and his father, the archbishop"--Container.

Bitter roots is set in Nyae-Nyae, a region of Namibia located in southern Africa's Kalahari desert, traditional home of the Ju/'hoansi. Shot in 2007, two years after Marshall's death (and including footage from his films), Bitter Roots documents the return of Strong and Ritchie to Nyae-Nyae where they observe the erosion of a community-led development process following the imposition of a new agenda led by the World Wildlife Fund, which prioritizes wildlife conservation and tourism over subsistence farming. Enemy alien
"Enemy Alien, a first-person documentary, is the gripping story of the fight to free Farouk Abdel-Muhti, a gentle but indomitable Palestinian-born human rights activist detained in a post-9/11 sweep of Muslim immigrants. Told through the eyes of the filmmaker (Konrad Aderer), the grandson of Japanese Americans interned during World War II, this story takes on new levels of intimacy and historical resonance. Farouk's quiet charisma creates an indelible impression even through the heavily restricted prison interviews. His idealism and lack of self-concern belie the severe toll his abusive imprisonment takes on his health which makes the fight for his freedom even more urgent. No helpless victim, Farouk organizes protests with his fellow detainees. In a stunning prison interview, Farouk awakens the filmmaker's connection with his own family history. Asking his grandmother about her World War II internment for the first time, Konrad fully confronts his generational legacy: the betrayal and helplessness of the 'enemy alien'. Resistance brings consequences - though not charged with any crime, Farouk is beaten and locked in solitary confinement, and his American-born son Tarek is arrested in a counterterrorism investigation into the documentary itself"--Cont.

Engaging inclusivity, practicing civility, and shaping learning communities for today and beyond
"Climate change is the defining global environmental justice, human rights and public health issue of the twenty-first century. The most vulnerable populations in the United States and around the world will suffer the earliest and most damaging setbacks because of where they live, their limited income and economic means, and their lack of access to health care. Climate-sensitive hazards are forecast to increase in the coming years. However, not all of the populations residing within these hazard zones have the same capacity to prepare for, respond to, cope with, and rebound from disaster events. Having worked with New Orleans post-Hurricane Katrina and witnessed firsthand Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Professor Robert D. Bullard's presentation will focus primarily on the U.S. and the need for empowering vulnerable populations, identifying environmental justice and climate change 'hot-spot' zones and designing fair, just and effective adaptation, mitigation, emergency management and community resilience and disaster recovery strategies. He will also discuss his book, The Wrong Complexion for Protection, which analyzes more than eight decades of government response to natural and human-made disasters. Finally, Dr. Bullard will offer strategies to dismantle institutional policies and practices that create, exacerbate and perpetuate inequality and vulnerability before and after disasters strike."--From event website: http://www.uvm.edu/~ues/blackboardjungle12/breakfast-keynote.html.

Eternal beauty : the story of the Third Reich through its own propaganda
"This is an essay on the aesthetics of National Socialist film. The history of the Third Reich is investigated in light of its own image making. Which hopes, desires and fears are reflected in these images? The film unfolds chronologically, with original material from 1918 to 1945. The focus of this film is the analysis of National Socialist documentary and 'Kultur-Film', which staged a media-produced world of illusions whose destructive intent is apparent from the very beginning." -- creator's website. "No other totalitarian regime is as closely associated with an artistic movement as Nazi Germany. From the towering architecture of Albert Speer to the grandiose films of Leni Riefenstahl, art fed into and shaped Nazi ideals, reflecting back a world where Aryan strength triumphs over all enemies. Through art on a monumental scale, Hitler created a world--and a worldview--as enticing as it was illusory...a world of eternal beauty. This program definitively examines the history of the Third Reich through the lens of its own artistic iconography--films that promoted German superiority, demonized Jews, encouraged love of the fatherland, and hid the fact that the nation, after reverses on every front, was steadily losing the war." -- distributor's website.

Eu, tu, eles
In a poor, dusty corner of Northeastern Brazil, pregnant Darlene says good-bye to her aged mother, her dusty settlement town, and sets off to be married. The wedding doesn't happen; she returns home years later with a son, in time to bury her mother. Darlene isn't especially young or gorgeous, but she is radiant with a full-bodied, earthy eroticism that proves irresistible to first one, then two, and finally three men. If Darlene needs all three to make one complete husband, well, they believe she has enough love to go around. The film weds the humor and magic of a folk tale to a very modern feel for the psychological dynamics between men and women, and for the subtle politics of male rivalry in a macho culture.

Ewige Schönheit : Vision und Todessehnsucht im Dritten Reich
