In order to link to online journal articles you will need:
- A stable URL (also known as persistent links or permalinks) or a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) for each article
- To ensure that all links you create will be routed through the Libraries' proxy server to permit off-campus login
Linking to Articles with Stable URLs
Stable URLs, when they are available, can usually be found on the page that links to the full-text of an article. Sometimes they can also be located by following a link to bookmark an article. Do not simply use the URL that appears in the address bar of your browser as this will usually not work. The following image shows how a stable URL looks in JSTOR.
In order for a stable URL to work from off-campus it must be preceded by the following proxy server information:
The full URL for the article above is:
https://login.ezproxy.uvm.edu/login?url=http://www.jstor.org/stable/774290
Linking to Articles With DOIs
Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are unique identifiers for journal articles. Many of our article databases and electronic journals include DOIs as part of the data describing each article. The image below shows a DOI for an article from ScienceDirect.
The process for creating links to materials using DOIs is different than for stable URLs. In order to create a link using a DOI that will work from off-campus the DOI must be preceded by the following:
The full URL for the article above is:
https://login.ezproxy.uvm.edu/login?url=http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.ecol...
Always test your link from on and off-campus.
