Visiting the Howe Library

The Howe Library will re-open to UVM affiliates (students, staff, and faculty) on August 31st.

We are deeply committed to the health and safety of our patrons and employees. The library will be open to UVM affiliates (students, staff, and faculty) in accordance with state social distancing guidelines. Seating will be reduced to accommodate social distancing protocols and library visitors will be limited to quiet, independent study. All campus Libraries will also continue to serve the UVM community with robust online access to collections and services.

Health and safety requirements

All visitors will be required to:

  • Complete daily health check-ins.
  • Be free of symptoms associated with COVID-19.
  • Wear a face covering, in accordance with campus and state guidelines.
  • Maintain six-foot social distancing guidelines.
  • Sanitize equipment and work stations after use.
  • Refrain from eating in the library (drinking from personal beverage containers is permitted).

For all COVID-19 information and instruction issued by UVM for the Fall 2020 semester, please refer to the Return to Campus website.

Hours and admittance

A valid CATcard ID is required to enter the library. Capacity is limited to 225 visitors at a time. Doorkeepers outside the library will monitor entrance. Because students urgently need places to study, students will receive priority for entry if the library approaches or reaches full capacity. People will be asked to return at another time or wait in line if the library is at capacity.

8am-10am (Monday – Friday) - Curbside pickup only. Faculty, staff, and students may retrieve requested items outside of Howe.

10am-6pm (Monday- Sunday) - Regular service. Howe is open to visitors. Computers, scanners, microfilm readers, stacks, and print materials are accessible.

Changes to in-person services, collections, and spaces

The Reference desk and research consultations with the librarian are available online.

Group study rooms, physical reserves, the popular reading collections, the Map Room, and the featured new books browsing area will be unavailable for the fall semester in order to comply with health and safety standards

Current periodicals and newspapers will be available on request at the Circulation Desk.

For the Fall 2020 semester Multimedia Services will offer media equipment and physical videos exclusively through curbside pickup and advance bookings.  Multimedia Services will be closed to walk-up services. The Multimedia Development Lab will be open to a limited number of visitors on a first-come, first-serve basis.

See Fall 2020 Services for more information.
