Abstract:
The relationships of static and kinetic friction coefficients as functions of snow temperature are discussed. Comparative data as a result of actual testing and measurement, for various ski surfaces is presented and analyzed. Also discussed is the development of the method of testing as well as recommendations for further research in this area. Basic theory in addition to previously available data is compared with test results and applicable conclusions drawn. The uniqueness of TEFLON as one of the surfaces tested and the problems encountered in utilizing this material in today's ski market is discussed. As presented, the ski wax data supports accepted theory, whereas the paraffin and polyethylene data tends to dispel some previously accepted beliefs.
