Abstract:
The given and chosen Identities that we hold are essential in the development of our Selves. Even though we commonly use our individual names to answer the question, "Who are you," I argue that Identity answers the question of "What are you?" Self, on the other hand, is truly the core of who we are.
Using a model called the Circle of Self and the writing methodology of Scholarly Persoqal Narrative, I will show how through our Identities, we add dimensions to our Selves. In turn, these dimensions create personal resources that we can draw upon when choosing future Identities. The Circle of Self encourages us take risks in trying new Identities when we have the opportunity to do so, each choice only empowering us.
Even though at times we may experience conflict between our inner and outer Identities, each new experience allows our Selves to expand with flexibility, capability, and confidence. Our Selves are continuously developing throughout the course of our lives as the Circle of Self remains in constant motion. This message is particularly important for Educators as we work to create environments that support and encourage our Students.
