Afternoon with Harry Belafonte
Harry Belafonte, internationally acclaimed artist and humanitarian, speaks on the subjects of social justice and equity at the university’s Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration. Belafonte, who has dedicated much of his life to supporting the worldwide human rights struggle, has also excelled in every area of the entertainment world as a recording artist, concert performer, movie star, Broadway actor, and television star and producer. The awards he has received are reflective of these passions and include the Albert Einstein Award; UNICEF's Danny Kaye Award; the Martin Luther King Peace Prize; and the Kennedy Center Honors for excellence in the performing arts. Belafonte, who was the first recipient of the Nelson Mandela Courage Award, has been honored by the American Jewish Congress; the NAACP; The Urban League; the National Conference of Black Mayors; the Anti-Defamation League of B'Nai B'rith; the ACLU; and the U.S. State Department and the Peace Corps. Belafonte has said that his work for human rights and his artistic pursuits have provided him with the basis for a productive and balanced life.

He has created over fifty works for the most celebrated companies in the United States, Canada, Europe and South America. Harry Belafonte provides candid reflections about McKayle's character and determination to stand on the frontline of changing racial prejudice in the performing arts in America. Rare archival television excerpts of dance classics from the 1950s and 1960s are shown for the first time as well as the television premiere of recent McKayle works performed by the Limon Dance Company of New York and the San Jose/Cleveland Ballet. Includes excerpts from Rainbow round my shoulder, Heartbeats, Saturday's child, District Storyville, They called her Moses, House of tears, Minstrel man, and Libertango and others.

In 1965, 21-year-old Torontonian, Paul Saltzman, drove to Mississippi, volunteering as a civil rights worker with the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee. He was arrested, spending ten days in jail. He was assaulted by a young Klansman. In 2007, Saltzman returned to find the KKK member who had punched him in the head, to explore if individual reconciliation was possible. He found him and a five year dialogue has ensued. Featuring interviews with Morgan Freeman and Harry Belafonte.
