-International index to journal articles, book chapters, and books in the fields of literature, film, linguistics, and folklore. Covers years: 1926-present.
MLA Directory of Periodicals accessed through MLA Bibliography. Search Guide

Arts & Humanities Citation Index  [Remote access - UVM only]
(part of Web of Science) (literature, philosophy, religion, history, art, film, etc.)  [Remote access - UVM only]
--Multidisciplinary index to the journal literature (articles, bibliographies, editorials, letters, reviews) of the arts and humanities. Note that the cited reference field at the end of most records lists references to works cited by the document's author. Covers years: 1982-present.

Interdisciplinary Research

Identify disciplines (e.g., history, psychology, political science, etc.) that might enrich your specific area of literary research. Use the databases specific to these disciplines. Examples: Historical Abstracts, America History & Life, PsycINFO, Worldwide Political Science Abstracts, etc.

Location of Periodicals in B/H Library - Print 

  • Current issues and back issues : 2nd floor. NOTE: most journal holdings in paper copy before 1960 are housed in the Library Research Annex.
  • Back issues:  Bound Periodical Stacks, arranged alphabetically by journal title; or found on microfilm. The Microforms Room is on the 2nd floor. NOTE: most journal holdings in paper copy before 1960 are housed in the Library Research Annex.
  • Current issues2nd floor in a separate section, arranged alphabetically by journal title.
  • The journal record in the Library Catalog will tell you: which issues are considered  "current"; whether the back issues are on microfilm, in the Bound Periodical Stacks, or in the Library Research Annex; if the journal has an electronic version accessible for viewing online.

Electronic (e-journals)

Most electronic journals are the online versions of well-established periodicals in print. They offer the full-text of feature articles, reviews, and creative writing. Coverage date varies by publication.

How to Locate Electronic Journals Subscribed to by UVM:

  • The journal record in the Library Catalog will tell you if the journal has an electronic version accessible for viewing online.
  • Accessed through the UVM Libraries' home page -> Find Articles & More-> Electronic Journals.(caution- page often slow to load)
  • To view a list of electronic Literature periodicals: Find Articles & More->  Electronic Journals -> click on Subjects tab ->select "Language and Literature" from the pull-down menu.

Electronic Journal Collections
(Accessed through the UVM Libraries' home page -> Find Articles & More-> List of Full-Text Databases).

JSTOR  (Journal STORage Project)  [Remote access - UVM only]
Electronic archive for journal backfiles. Searches  the contents of thousands of issues of core scholarly journals in the humanities, socials sciences, and sciences back to the 19th century. Issues published within the last 2-5 years are generally not covered. The purpose of JSTOR is to provide access to back issues of journals, not current issues.

Project Muse  [Remote access - UVM only]
Extensive collection of electronic journals published by major university presses in the arts, humanities, social sciences and mathematics. Year coverage is generally for the last 4-5  years. 

Search Tips:

  • Use the "Advanced Search" mode (JSTOR and Project Muse)
  • Limit your publication type to "Article" to avoid retrieving book reviews (JSTOR and  Project Muse)
  • You may use truncation. The truncation symbol is *        (JSTOR and Project Muse)
  • Enclose a phrase within quotation marks. Example:  "paradise lost"    (JSTOR and Project Muse)
  • In JSTOR, use proximity searching to find terms that are within a specific number of words of each other. Use the tilde (~) as a proximity operator to limit your search Example: to search for an item with the terms ariel and tempest within ten words of each other, construct the following query: "ariel tempest"~10
  • In JSTOR, you may limit your search to one or more disciplines by clicking in the box to the left of the discipline
  • In JSTOR, you may limit your search to a specific language
