- Note: If you need help with finding the correct or "valid" subject term, use the multi-volume set of red books, Library of Congress Subject Headings, located in the Reference area.
- Note: People can be subjects.
  Example: melville herman [ look for subdivisions such as --criticism and interpretation or --biography ]

TIP: When entering a subject heading with subdivisions, do not type in the dashes which separate the heading and subdivision(s).
Example: american literature 19th century history and criticism NOT american literature--19th century--history and criticism
