SWSS 164 Introduction to Social Work Research

Much valuable information can be found on the World Wide Web, but it may be difficult to separate scholarly research from personal opinions in this vast ocean of (primarily) unedited/not evaluated material.   For important guidelines on evaluating web sites, click on http://library.uvm.edu/~pmardeus/webeval.html

Information for Practice is a new, free, resource for social service professionals that is updated daily. The focus is on: professionally relevant stories in the world's news outlets; new articles in scholarly journals; and new resources appearing in the grey literature (e.g., scientific and technical reports primarily from governments and organizations). The goal of this service is to provide social service professionals with easier access to high quality information that can be used to improve their practice.

The Social Work Cafe is a friendly guide to Internet resources, compiled by social workers.

The George Warren Brown School of Social Work maintains a topical index called Social Work and Social Services Websites

Select Google for a keyword approach to searching millions of web sites.  To make your search more specific, choose the "Advanced" search mode, where you can refine your search by a series of limits, such as searching for words only in the title of the web page, specifying certain domains, etc.

Select Yahoo for a subject approach to selected Internet sites, and go directly to Education at http://dir.yahoo.com/Education to explore the links to web sites and home pages.
