HOW TO SEARCH SOCIAL SERVICES ABSTRACTS
Demonstration screens below do not contain live links!

Search terms may be words, phrases, subject headings, or combinations of these.

Limit your search by publication type, language, or date and change display options if appropriate.

Click on the Search button.

Displaying your search results

At the top of the search results screen, you can select the type of publication if the original search was not limited in this way.  Choices include all publication types, journals, peer-reviewed journals, web sites, book reviews, and dissertations.

Your search results will appear listed in brief format, including article title, author, journal title, volume, issue, pages, and date.  An extract from the summary is included, plus links to the longer form of the record (View Record), citing authors (Cited by ...), full text online if available (Full-Text Linking), and the UVM library catalog (Local Holdings).
Note that SSA subject headings (Descriptors) are listed to the right of the citation.  Check these for alternative keywords or subject headings to refine your search.

Use the mouse to press the arrows or move the scroll bar to scan through your citations.

To see the detailed record, including the complete summary paragraph, click on View Record.

For journal articles, the Source line contains the journal title and publication information. The journal title and volume number, issue number, pages and date are needed to search the library catalog and determine whether UVM Libraries own the journal and, if so, where it is kept. Click on Check Local Holdings to do this automatically.

Click on Find the journal to check the UVM Libraries Catalog.

If the University owns the journal, the library catalog will specify which issues are held and where they are kept.  Children & Schools is available in Bound Periodicals in the Periodicals Department on the 2nd floor of Bailey/Howe Library from 2000 to 2004, and the most recent year is in the Current Issues room.

Marking, Saving, Printing, and E-mailing records

To select citations, click in the box (to the left of the citation) for the citations you want to add to your list. A check mark will appear in the box.

When you have finished marking records, click on Save/Print/Email Records.

You will be prompted to select which records and fields you want to output.  If you print while working in the libraries, you will have to select a printer from those available in the Reference area and the Cyber Cafe.
