Reference, research consultations, and instruction
Librarians are available to meet with students, faculty, and staff in 1:1 research consultations, provide point-of-need help through our virtual reference services, or meet with your classes to provide research instruction. The virtual reference desk will be staffed from 9am to 6pm, Monday through Thursday, and from 9am to 4pm on Fridays.
Curbside pickup
Monday-Friday, 8 am - 10 am, UVM affiliates (students, staff, and faculty) may pick up Howe Library books, books obtained through Interlibrary Loan, and media equipment and DVDs by appointment at a designated area adjacent to the Howe Library front entrance. Howe Library Circulation and Multimedia Services staff will communicate with borrowers via email or phone to locate requested materials and coordinate pickup and drop-off times. Alumni and guest borrowers are also permitted to use the service.
Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery
We have greatly expanded efforts to provide scanned copies of articles and book chapters in the UVM Libraries’ collections. All Interlibrary Loan services continue. Our ILL staff will make every effort to obtain for you material we do not own. If you are learning remotely, we can mail books owned by the Howe Library and the Dana Medical Library to your home. Please indicate that you are not on campus and provide us with your mailing address.
Multimedia Services
Multimedia Services will offer media equipment and physical videos exclusively through curbside service and advance bookings. All media equipment and film/DVDs will be available through curbside service outside of the Howe Library and through an indoor pickup service located at the Multimedia service point. All requests for media equipment and film/DVDs must be made in advance with our online booking system. Pick up service at the Multimedia Service Desk is available by appointment between the hours of 10:00 am and 4:00 pm. Faculty are encouraged to contact the Multimedia services department if you plan to show a film as a component of your class. We can help determine whether a digital (streaming) or traditional hardcopy is the best choice for your needs.
Recommend a Purchase
Priority will be given to requests for materials for course reserve or immediate academic need. We may also choose to select electronic versions instead of print. All purchase requests will still be accepted and processed as available via our vendors and suppliers. We thank you for your patience as there may be an extended amount of time between request and availability of items.
Reserves
The Howe Library continues its electronic reserves services but will not be able to offer course reserves for physical items (including textbooks) for the Fall 2020 semester, due to professional standards requiring a four-day quarantine of books and other physical materials after use. Print books and other physical resources cannot be placed on reserve by instructors, and personal copies will not be accepted for physical course reserves. Please contact our e-reserves staff at Howe and hwreserv@uvm.edu to troubleshoot alternatives as needed.
Guest Borrowing
Alumni and guest borrowers are permitted to use the Curbside Service.
