Services at Bailey/Howe Library -
Research Affiliate Cards

General Use & Circulation Policy

A Research Affiliate card is available to those residents of Vermont who need a broader range of service than the usual guest borrower card provides. The fee for a Research Affiliate's card is $75.00 per year.

General Borrowing Privileges

You may use any library on campus subject to the policies governing that specific library.

You may check out a maximum of 100 books from the circulating collections of UVM Libraries at any one time. However, materials in the Media Resources collection and the Dana Medical Library collection do not circulate to Research Affiliates.

You may use non-circulating materials (reference, periodicals, microforms, and special collections) in the library.

You may make use of other library services, such as reference assistance, photocopy machines, and reference assistance in U.S. Government Documents and Special Collections.

Your card is non-transferable and may be used only in person. For your protection, we require a second form of identification (e.g. driver's license) with your Research Affiliate card to charge out books.

Your card does not provide access to any University computer labs.

Loan Periods

Books are checked out for one semester except for the Popular Reading which may be checked out for two weeks only.

Holds and Searches

If you cannot locate a book on the shelf, check the UVM Library Catalog to see if the book has been checked out to someone. If the book is not on the shelf and is not checked out to someone, please request that a search be conducted by notifying staff at the Circulation Desk.

We will gladly hold books for 48 hours for anyone who does not have an identification card. Please make arrangements at the Circulation Desk.

Recalled Books

Any library material you have checked out may be recalled for use by a UVM student, faculty member, or staff member. Materials requested for course reserve are subject to immediate recall. If you do not return a recalled item by the date indicated on the recall notice, you will be charged a $15 recall overdue fee, and you will lose borrowing privileges until the book is returned to the library. Borrowers are advised to review the University Academic Honesty Policy which is printed in the Cat's Tale and the UVM Course Catalogue

Overdue Materials and Fines

All library users are subject to charges. Library users are responsible for remembering when their books are overdue. A date due slip is placed in the back of each charged book. One overdue notice is sent before a charge notice is generated. Overdue notices are a courtesy. Failure to receive this notice does not exempt a user from overdue charges.

Overdue Charges and Replacement Charges

If you do not return a book within ten days of the due date, you will incur a charge. An overdue transaction charge of $5.00 is charged for each book overdue. Cost of replacement is $50.00. It is based on average book price statistics and is subject to change. Cost adjustments are made for expensive items or items that may have to be searched for and obtained from the out-of-print book market.

Borrowing privileges may be revoked after you have been billed for two overdue and/or lost items
