K-12 Educator Guest Borrower Cards
General Use & Circulation Policy
Eligibility requirements for K-12 Educator Guest Borrowers
Any educator at a Vermont K–12 institution may get a card. The faculty member's supervisory district or private school's administrative office must have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with us before the faculty member can obtain a borrower's card.
How an individual can get a K-12 Educator-Guest Borrower card
You may apply for a card by completing an authorization form available through your supervisory district or through your school's administrative office. The form has the information we require for completing your request for a card, and should include the signature of your school district or administrative official. Send or hand-deliver a copy of the form to The Circulation Supervisor, Bailey/Howe Library, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT 05405.
PLEASE NOTE that we need one week to process the request from the date of receiving the form. K-12 Educator-Guest Borrowers will need to renew their cards each year by presenting a letter from the administrator of the participating institution or another copy of the aforementioned form. The borrower's card will be valid from September 1 to August 31 each academic year. Once the card has been processed, you may check out library materials.
The hours you may obtain a completed K-12 Educator-Guest Borrower card from Bailey/Howe Library are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., and Friday-Sunday, 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
General Borrowing Privileges
You may check out a maximum of 10 books from the circulating collections of the Bailey/Howe Library (including Curriculum Materials Center materials and government documents) and Cook Chemistry/Physics Library. Materials in Dana Medical Library, Bailey/Howe's popular reading collection and the Media Library do not circulate to K-12 Educator-Guest Borrowers. Of course you may use non-circulating materials (reference works, periodicals, microforms, and resources in Special Collections) in the library. You may also use reference assistance in the Reference, Special Collections, and Documents and Maps departments.
Items you borrow from the UVM Libraries are for your own professional use, and should not be lent to students or colleagues, or placed on course reserve at your school library. You may use library resources that are marked for public use. Other databases are reserved for use by UVM primary affiliates because of contractual arrangements with information suppliers.
Loan Periods
Books are checked out for 4 weeks except for the Popular Reading Books that may be checked out for two weeks only. K-12 Educator-Guest Borrowers may not keep materials from the libraries for more than 1 loan period. All items must be returned directly to the supplying library (Bailey/Howe or Cook Chemistry/Physics).
Holds and Searches
If you cannot locate a book on the shelf, use the UVM Library Catalog, to see if the book has been checked out to someone. Although we do not recall books for K-12 Educator-Guest Borrowers, we will place a hold on the item. You will be notified when the requested book is returned, and it will be held for you at the Circulation Desk for 7 days. If a book is not on the shelf and is not checked out to someone, please request that a search be conducted by notifying the staff at the Circulation Desk.
Recalled Books
Any library material you have checked out may be recalled because a UVM student, faculty or staff member wants to use it. Materials for course reserve are subject to immediate recall from any borrower. If you do not return an item by the date listed on the recall notice, you will be charged a $15 recall overdue fee, and will lose borrowing privileges until the book is returned to the library. It is your responsibility to return all recalled items when they are due, regardless of geographic
distance or personal schedule. Books may be mailed back to us at The Circulation Department, Bailey/Howe Library, University of Vermont, Burlington, VT 05405.
Overdue Materials, Overdue and Replacement Charges
All library users are subject to charges. One overdue notice is sent before a charge notice is generated. Overdue notices are a courtesy. Failure to receive this notice does not excuse a user
from overdue charges. Charge slips in the back of charged books clearly state the due dates. All library users are responsible for keeping track of their books' due dates. If you do not return a book, you will incur charges. An overdue transaction charge of $5.00 is charged for each book. Cost of replacement is, in general, $50 per book. Cost adjustments are made for expensive items or items that may have to be obtained in the out-of-print market. Borrowing privileges will be revoked after you have been billed for 2 overdue and/or lost items. Once this occurs, the cardholder may not reapply for borrowing privileges until the following September.
Interlibrary Loan
Interlibrary loan service is extended only to UVM affiliates. Your own institution's library can help you to locate materials not available at UVM. Please consult your school librarian for this service.
