Special Collections

The Special Collections Department of the Bailey/Howe Library houses the Wilbur Collection of Vermontiana (published books and periodicals, manuscript collections, maps, photographs, etc.), the Rare Book Collection, and the University Archives. The Special Collections reading room and offices are located on the ground floor of the Bailey/Howe Library.

Fifty years ago, librarians in UVM’s new Guy W. Bailey Library unveiled the Special Collections Department.  The new department brought together Vermont research materials and the rare book collections, formerly housed in the Fleming Museum and Billings Library.  For the first time, these materials—and the specialized attention they required—were combined in one department with a special educational and research mission. This year, Special Collections is celebrating 50 busy years with a variety of events and activities.
