Secure Access to Online Library Resources

The Virtual Private Network - VPN

The use of many library resources from off-campus is restricted to University of Vermont students, faculty, and staff. This includes most of the databases licensed by the UVM Libraries as well as thousands of electronic journals. In order to access these materials you need to authenticate to the UVM network. The VPN client, running on your home computer, creates a secure connection to the UVM network over the Internet, allowing you to access library materials as if you were an on-site user. For most users, the VPN client will replace the proxy server.

VPN will:

  • Create a secure connection.
  • Authenticate the user using your UVM network/email account.
  • Install easily (already configured for UVM users).
VPN will not:
  • Work with AOL.
  • Work with Windows 95.
UVM students and employees who want to set up a VPN connection should install the necessary software on their computers. The software may be downloaded from http://www.uvm.edu/software/ (look for "Cisco VPN client") or a copy on disc may be borrowed at the Reserves Desk in the Bailey/Howe Library. You must use your UVM Zoo account for authentication. Go to http://www.uvm.edu/account if you have questions about your Zoo account.

Once the VPN client is installed simply start it before trying to use any of the Libraries' restricted resources. You can start and stop the VPN client at anytime without interrupting your Internet connection or exiting any of your applications.

Having problems? You'll find additional information about VPN including known problems in the VPN FAQ and the VPN Troubleshooting Guide.
