Recovering Files Accidentally Deleted From Your Server Space

Using Secure Shell Client

If you have accidentally deleted a file from your UVM server space (NetID space), use the following instructions to restore your lost file. Please note that files deleted over a month ago or files that are less than one day old cannot be recovered.

1. Open the SSH Secure Shell Client program by clicking on the icon.

If you do not already have this program on your computer, it can be downloaded from the UVM Software Archive.

2. Click "Quick Connect"
  • Under "Host name" type zoo
  • Under "User name" type your UVM user ID
  • Click "OK"
  • If a pop-up appears, choose not to save the host key to the local database by clicking No.
  • When prompted for a password, use your Net ID password (the same you would use for your UVM e-mail account).
3. Next to "Enter terminal type (4410,ansi,sun,tvi950, vt100...)" enter vt100

4. Next to "zoo>" enter recover. This will start running the recover program in zoo.

5. Next to "recover>" enter help. This will provide you with a list of commands in the recover program to choose from.

6. Next to "recover>" enter changetime [date] ex. changetime september 21. This step will change the date of the recover browser's index. Enter a date in which there was a good copy of the file on your server space.

7. Next to "recover>" enter dir. This will list all the files on your server space on the date specified in Step 6.

8. Find the filename of the one accidentally deleted, then enter add [filename], i.e. add lostfile.doc. The program will then tell you how many files are marked for recovery. To recover multiple files, keep repeating this step adding each lost file individually.

9. Enter list next to "recover>" to view a list of files to recover. It is important to remember that all files in this list will replace files of the same name on your server space.

10. Enter recover, then wait. It may take several minutes to recover even one file.

11. When it says "files recovered" enter exit to exit the recover program. Enter exit a second time to logout of your server space (zoo).

12. Check your account to see if the files have been recovered.
