Attaching Files to E-mail Messages in Pine

These instructions assume that you are attaching a file to an e-mail message on a computer at the UVM Libraries

1. Composing the document

Create the file you wish to send. The document can be of any type; anything from a picture to a Word document or Excel spreadsheet. We'll use a Word document as an example.

2. Save the file
  • Click on “File” in the Word menu bar.
  • Click on “Save.”
  • The "Save In" space appears at the top of the dialog box. Click on the upside-down triangle on the right side of this to choose a location
  • Click in the space labeled "File Name" the type an eight letter name, no spaces, and a three letter extension, for the file. The name should look like this: brenfile.doc
See the table below for the correct extension for your document.

Graphic .jpg, .gif
  • In the "Save as Type" space, be sure the program you used to create the document shows is visible.
  • Click on the “Save” button.
3. Move the file to your e-mail account
  • Open FTP Voyager
    • Go to the Start Menu and complete the following path: Programs- FTP Voyager- FTP Voyager
  • Login to your e-mail account with the FTP Site Profile Manager
    • Make sure the following information is in the spaces indicated. If it doesn't appear, you must enter it.
      Note: you must click in each box before you can begin entering information.
      • Name: Zoo
      • FTP site: uvm.edu
    • If the box beside “Anonymous Login” is checked, uncheck it.
    • User ID: enter what you type at login for your E-mail account.
    • Password: enter the password for your E-mail account.
    • Click the “Connect” button.
  • Move the file
    • The top half of the screen is the directory of your e-mail account.
    • The bottom half of the screen is the computer you are working on. Navigate to the file you created.
    • Drag the file into the top part of the screen to the right side to the list of files. Don't drag it into a folder.
    • Close FTP Voyager by clicking on the box with an “x” in it in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
4. Composing the e-mail message
  • Login to your zoo account.
  • Begin the e-mail message in the usual way. Type in the address of the recipient, then press the "Enter" key twice so that the cursor is on the "Attachment" line.
  • While holding down the "Control" key, press the letter key "J".
  • The following message appears at the bottom of the screen: "File to attach".
  • While holding down the "Control" key, press the letter key "T". A list of files in your e-mail account appears.
  • Using the arrow keys, maneuver the bright area so that the file you want to attach is highlighted.
  • Press the "Enter" key. The file is attached to the e-mail message.
  • The following message appears at the bottom of the screen: "Attach comment". Whatever you type here will appear in the "Attachment" line. You can use it to briefly describe the attachment, or you can leave it blank. Press the "Enter" key.
  • Press the "Enter" key to move the cursor to the Subject line. Add a subject for the e-mail message, if you wish.
  • Press the "Enter" key to move the cursor to the body of the message. Compose the body of the e-mail message.
  • Send the message in the usual way.

Viewing Attachments in Pine

1. Viewing the file
  • With the E-mail message on the screen, press the ">" key to start the viewing process.
  • Press the “>” key again to view the attachment.
  • In some cases, the file can be read at this point. If the file can't be viewed, you will be prompted to save it.
2. Saving the file
  • Press the “S” key to save the file.
  • In some cases, the file name and extension will be automatically inserted. In other cases, you will be prompted for a file name and extension. Type in a file name with up to eight letters, no spaces and a three-letter extension. The extension must correspond to the file type. The extension is extremely important: it tells the computer what software to use to open the file. See the list of file types and extensions above.
  • Press the “Enter” key to save the file. The file will be saved in your E-mail directory.
  • Press the “Q” key to exit Pine.
3. Open FTP Voyager
  • Go to the Start Menu and complete the following path: Programs/FTP Voyager/ FTP Voyager
  • Login to your e-mail account with the FTP Site Profile Manager
  • Make sure the following information is in the spaces indicated. If it doesn't appear, you must enter it.
    Note: you must click in each box before you can begin entering information.
    • Name: Zoo
    • FTP site: uvm.edu
  • If the box beside “Anonymous Login” is checked, uncheck it.
  • User ID: enter what you type at login for your E-mail account.
  • Password: enter the password for your E-mail account.
  • Click the “Connect” button.
  • The top half of the screen is the directory of your e-mail account. Find the file you saved by scrolling down the list of files on the right side.
  • · The bottom half of the screen is the computer you are working on.
4. Opening the File
  • In many cases, the file can now be opened simply by double clicking on it. If the file still doesn't open, ask the staff at the Circulation desk for help.
