Overview on Finding Books

Books are an excellent source for in depth information on broad topics. The guides in this section will help you to learn how to search for books at UVM and beyond.

The Library Catalog

There are numerous tools that can be used for locating books. The most basic of these is The Library Catalog. The Library Catalog is a searchable listing of the materials that UVM owns. Use the Library Catalog to determine whether or not UVM owns a particular book, journal, movie, or newspaper and to find out where items are located (including online locations for electronic materials).

What is Included in the Library Catalog

You can use the Library Catalog to determine if UVM has access to the following types of materials:

  • Books
  • Journals and magazines (both in print and online)
  • Newspapers (in print and online)
  • DVDs and videos
  • Government documents

What is Not Included in the Library Catalog

  • Individual journal articles are not listed in the Library Catalog - always search the Catalog for the journal title.

Accessing the Library Catalog

You can get to the Library Catalog in the following locations on the Library Web site.

  • Click on the lable Library catalog in the red bar on every page of the Library Web site. This will open the full version of the Library Catalog.
  • From the short-cut to the Library Catalog that can be found on every page of the Library Web site in the black banner area.
