Q: How do I get started?
A: Click on the Groovix Menu button in the bottom left corner to view program options.

Q: What browsers are available?
A: The only browser on this machine is the Mozilla Firefox web browser. The opening page is set to UVM Webmail (http://webmail.uvm.edu).

Q: What kind of work can I do on this computer?
A: You can browse web sites, use web-based applications, and view Flash, Real Media, PDF and Java content.

Q: Can I open Microsoft-compatible files?
A: Yes, the workstation is loaded with OpenOffice Suite allowing users to open and edit documents created in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The OpenOffice Suite also includes an HTML editor.

Q: How does the workstation ensure my privacy?
A: For maximum privacy protection, users are encouraged to end their session when work is complete. To end your session, click on the Groovix Menu button to view program options. Select the End Session and Clear All Information option, which completely clears all user information and then displays a new Firefox browser page.

Q: How do I get to my UVM files?
A: To open your files stored in your UVM NetID account:

  • Click on the Groovix Menu button to view available programs.
  • Select the Connect to my UVM files option.
  • Supply your user name and password when asked.
  • Once connected, use the Firefox File open to browse your UVM account file system. The workstation will open files for which it recognizes file extensions.
  • To finish, select End Session and Clear All Information from the Groovix Menu.

Q: Can I print from this workstation?
A: Yes, users can send print jobs to any of the publicly available printers in the library. Take note of the user number pinned on the wall panel in front of you. More information.

Q: Can I save files to my flash drive on this machine?
A: Yes, USB ports are available on each end of the keyboard.

Q: Can I use "instant messaging" on this workstation?
A: Yes, this workstation has GAIM Messenger which allows you to connect to AIM, Gadu-Gadu, GroupWise, IRC, Jabber, MSN, Napster, and Yahoo. To open an "instant messaging" session:

  • Click on the Groovix Menu button in the bottom left corner of the screen to display available programs.
  • At the top of that program menu, select GAIM Messenger.
  • When asked, enter the screen name.
  • Select the service you want to use from a drop down list and then enter your password.
