Instant Messaging Technology at the Reference Desk
The Dana Medical Library (screen name: danareference) now provides real time reference assistance to our users. We utilize AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) to provide this service. Please follow the steps below to get instant help (Monday - Friday 8:30am - 5pm) from a Dana reference librarian.
Download and install AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM) from the AIM site. All technical questions, for example, problems with installation, etc regarding AOL Instant Messenger service should be referred to the AIM download site.
- Add “danareference” to your buddy list.
- Open an IM window by double clicking “danareference” in your buddy list
- Type your question in and a reference librarian will write back as soon as possible.
Notes on this service:
- Our service is available M-F 8:30 am-5 pm. These hours are subject to change.
- Patrons physically present take precedence over IM users.
- This service is available to all faculty and staff affiliated with UVM or FAHC. Users may be asked to provide evidence of that affiliation (e.g. their University ID number or library borrower number.)
- This service is intended for brief reference questions only. More extensive inquires are best handled by visiting the library and speaking personally with a reference librarian; calling the reference desk (656-2201) during regular business hours; or emailing the Dana reference staff.
