Information for Faculty

Books and Visual Materials

General Information

  • Books from Dana's collection, or personal copies, may be placed on Reserve.
  • CDs, DVDs, and videos from Dana's collection, or legally made personal copies, may be placed on Reserve.
  • Books and visual materials may be placed on Reserve indefinitely, although it is recommended that the collection for a particular course or subject area be periodically reviewed for relevance and currency.
  • At the beginning of the semester, materials will not be available for up to four working days due to the large volume of Reserve processing. At other times, please allow one to two working days for items to be processed.
  • Please include a course syllabus with your request.

Procedure for Placing Books and Visual Materials on Reserve

  • Request that books and videos from Dana's collection be placed on Reserve.

  • E-mail your syllabus to Dana's Curriculum Support staff at Dana Reserves
  • Bring personal copies of books and videos to the Circulation desk with to be placed on Reserve. Download the form and bring the completed copy with you. (Downloading the form requires Adobe Acrobat Reader).
  • Under certain circumstances, videos owned by UVM libraries and be close captioned for differently-abled students. These close-captioned copies of videos can then be placed on Reserve. See: Close captioning of videos.

Journal Articles and Book Chapters

Articles and book chapters can be placed in Dana's Print collection in the form of photocopies, or placed on Electronic Reserve in PDF format.

  Advantages Disadvantages
Photocopies in Print Reserve
  • Easy to make copies.
  • Don’t have to know passwords.
  • Available when Dana is open-doesn’t depend on computer (access) problems.
  • Only one person at a time can use a copy, so multiple copies are required.
  • Articles/pages are lost (or damaged).
  • Available only when Dana is open.
Electronic Reserve
  • Available 24/7, from anywhere.
  • Available to all students in the class, at once.
  • Requires username and password.
  • Requires a fast Internet connection.

Photocopies

  • Materials photocopied and placed in the Reserve stacks will be removed at the end of the semester.

    • Articles and book chapters from Dana's print or electronic collections, or personal copies, may be placed on Reserve.
    • Bring personal or department photocopies of articles and book chapters to the Dana Circulation desk.
    • Request a photocopy of an article or book chapter for Print Reserve via Document Delivery from Dana's print collection. DART fees apply. Include your course name.

    Electronic Reserve

    General Information

    Copyrighted Material: Journal Articles and Book Chapters

    Procedure for Placing Copyrighted Materials on Electronic Reserve

    • Articles and book chapters from Dana's print or electronic collections, or personal copies, may be placed on Electronic Reserve.
    • Bring personal or department photocopies of articles and book chapters to the Dana Circulation desk for scanning.
    • Request an article or book chapter for Electronic Reserve from Dana's print or electronic collection. A direct link to an electronic material will be made whenever possible

      E-mail your syllabus to Dana's Curriculum Support staff at Dana Reserves
    • Request an item through InterLibary Loan for Electronic Reserve. Include your name and course information. All fees apply.

    Un-copyrighted Material: Class Notes, PowerPoint Presentations, Exams, etc.

    Procedure for Placing Un-copyrighted Materials on Electronic Reserve

    • Any material that is in electronic format, or that can be scanned, can be placed on Electronic Reserve.
    • Bring paper copies of course materials to the Dana Circulation desk to be scanned.
      or
      Bring the course material files on a diskette or CD to the Dana Circulation desk, or e-mail them to Dana's Curriculum Support staff at Dana Reserves.
