Linking to Articles in Online Journals

Many online journals allow linking to individual articles via a course Web site or online syllabus, including courses delivered through WebCT or COMET. In some cases doing this is as easy as copying the link as it appears in the browser address/location bar, in others a special link may need to be created or found. For the best results, follow the instructions below exactly. You will also need to occasionally check the links you have created to make sure they are still accurate, since links are subject to change without notice.

Off Campus Access: Following these instructions does not bypass any access restrictions to journals from off campus. If you want access to these articles from off campus, you will still need to follow the directions for accessing Dana from off campus.

Not All Journal Articles Are Available Online: If you would like to have a print copy of an article scanned and placed on Electronic Reserve, contact Curriculum Support Services at the Dana Medical Library by calling 656-2200, or see the Course Reserve Web Site for more information.

We can help. If you want some help linking to an article in an online journal, please contact Curriculum Support Services at the Dana Medical Library by calling 656-2200, or see the Course Reserve Web Site for more information.

For Most Online Journals

  • Connect to UVM E-Journals using one of the following methods:
  • Find the article, and open the full text.
  • Copy the link in the address/location bar and paste it into your document.
This simple procedure works beautifully for articles in most online journals. In some cases however, the link you find in the browser address/location bar will change every time you connect to the article. If you copy and paste that link into your course web page, there's no guarantee that it will connect you to the same article next time you click on it. The link is dynamic. What you want is a permanent, persistent, stable link to the article.
