Writing Your Paper With Word 2002

Before You Start
  • View Toolbars.
    • In the Word Menu, go to View | Toolbars.
    • Click on Standard.
    • In the Word Menu, go to View | Toolbars.
    • Click on Formatting.
  • Show Entire Toolbars.
    • In the Word Menu, go to View | Toolbars.
    • Select Customize.
    • Click on the Options tab.
    • Make sure the boxes beside the following have been selected.
      • Show Standard and Formatting toolbars in two rows.
      • Always show full menus.

    This is what the top of the screen should look like:



File Management
  • Saving A File.
    • Click on the Save button on the Standard Toolbar.
    • Type a file name in the "File Name" box.
    • Click on Save.
  • Opening A File.
    • Click on the Open button on the Standard Toolbar.
    • Click on filename.
    • Click on Open.
  • Create A New File.
    • Click on the New button on the Standard Toolbar.
Title Page

Hint: save the title page as a separate file to avoid formatting problems in the rest of the document.

  • Centering Text On The Page.
    • Type and select the text to be Centered.
    • In the Word Menu, go to File | Page Setup.
    • Click on the Layout tab.
    • In the Vertical alignment box, click on Center.
    • Click on OK.
  • Centering Text On The Line.
    • Type and select the text to be centered.
    • Click on the Center button on the Formatting Toolbar.
Formatting The Body Of The Document
  • Margins.
    • In the Word Menu, go to File | Page Setup.
    • Click on the Margins tab.
    • Click in the boxes and type new values to change the margin settings.
    • Click on OK.
  • Line Spacing.
    • Select the text to be changed.
    • In the Word Menu, go to Format | Paragraph.
    • Click on the Indents and Spacing tab.
    • Click in the Line Spacing box under Spacing and type the new line spacing.
    • Click on OK.
Working With Text
  • To Copy Text To Another Location.
    • Select the text to be copied.
    • Click on the Copy button on the Standard Toolbar. .
    • Click on the location for the text.
    • Click on the Paste button on the Standard Toolbar.
  • To Move Text To Another Location.
    • Select the text to be changed.
    • Click on the Cut button on the Standard Toolbar.
    • Click on the new location for the text.
    • Click on the Paste button on the Standard Toolbar.
  • Undo And Redo.
    • To Undo Actions.
    • Note: Multiple actions must be undone in sequence.

      • To undo a single action, click on the Undo button on the Standard Toolbar.
      • To undo several actions, click on the next to the Undo button
    • To Redo Actions.
    • Note: Multiple actions must be redone in sequence.

      • To redo a single action, click on the Redo button on the Standard Toolbar.
      • To redo several actions, click on the next to the Redo button in the Standard toolbar.
  • Font Type And Size.
    • Select the text to be changed.
    • Click the Font button and on the Formatting Toolbar.
  • Bold, Italics, Underline.
    • Select the text to be changed.
    • Click on the Bold , Italic , or Underline buttons on the Formatting Toolbar.

    Note: these are toggle buttons: click once to apply the formatting, click again to remove the formatting.

  • Subscripts And Superscripts.
    • Select the text to be changed.
    • To apply subscripts: hold down the Ctrl key while you press the (+=) key on the keyboard .
    • To apply superscripts: hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys while you press the (+=) key on the keyboard.
Page Numbering
  • Create Page Numbering.
  • Note: Page numbers can be viewed with Print Preview .

    • In the Word Menu, go to Insert | Page Numbers.
    • Select a location for the page number:
      • Click on the below Position.
      • Click on the desired location.
    • Select an alignment for the page number:
      • Click on the below Alignment.
      • Click on the desired alignment.
    • Don't click on OK yet.
  • To omit the page number on the first page.
    • Click in the box beside "Show Number on First Page" to deselect it.
    • Don't click on OK yet!.
  • To change the value of the page number.
    • Click on the Format button.
    • Click in the circle below "Start At" and type the new number in the box.
    • Click on OK.
    • Click on OK.
  • To Remove Page Numbers You Just Added.
    • Click on the Undo button.
Print Preview
  • Click on the Print Preview button on the Standard Toolbar.
  • To return to normal view click on the Close button at the top of the screen.
Add a Header

Note: headers can be viewed with Print Preview on the Standard Toolbar.

  • Create the Header.
    • In the Word Menu, go to View | Header and Footer. The Header and Footer Toolbar opens.
    • In the Header and Footer Toolbar, click on the Switch Between Header And Footer button.
    • This button toggles between the Header (the box with dotted lines that appears at the top of the page) and the Footer (the box with dotted lines that appears at the bottom of the page).
    • Click this button until the Header box appears.
  • Add Information to the header.
    • To add information to the header, click in the box and type it. If you are adding a page number, hit the space bar to make room for the page number.
    • To add the page number, click on the Insert Page Number button.
  • Justify the Information.
    • Select the text to be changed.
    • Click on the "Left", "Center", or "Right" justification button on the Formatting Toolbar.
  • Click on the Close button in the Header and Footer Toolbar.
Spell Check
  • Click on the Spell Check button on the Standard Toolbar.
  • Select the correct spelling appears in the "Suggestions" box, click on it.
  • Click on Change.
  • Continue until the entire document has been checked.
  • Click on OK to close the "Spelling Check is Complete" box.
Printing
  • To Print The Entire Document.
    • Click on the Print button in the Standard Toolbar.
  • To Print The Current Page Of The Document.
    • In the Word Menu, go to File | Print.
    • Click in the circle to the left of Current Page.
    • Click on OK.
  • To Print Selected Pages Of The Document.
    • In the Word Menu, go to File | Print.
    • Click in the circle to the left of Print Pages and type the page numbers of the pages to be printed in the box. For example: 1,3,5-12.
    • Click on OK.
