The Virtual Private Network - VPN
Use the Cisco VPN software to:
- Provide secure access to online Library resources
The use of many UVM resources from off-campus is restricted to University of Vermont students and employees, and FAHC employees. These resources include the Ovid databases and over 800 electronic journals. The VPN client, running on your home computer, can create a secure connection to the UVM network over the Internet, allowing you to access restricted library materials as if you were an on-site user. For most users, the VPN client will replace the proxy server.
- Provide access to the UVM Cat's PAWS wireless network
VPN will:
- Create a secure connection.
- Authenticate the user.
- Install easily (already configured for UVM users).
VPN will not:
- Work with AOL.
- Work with Windows 95.
UVM students, staff and faculty who want to set up a VPN connection should download the necessary software to their home computer from http://www.uvm.edu/software/. Look for "Cisco VPN client" and click on "Download". You must use your UVM Network ID (Zoo account) for authentication. Go to http://www.uvm.edu/account if you have questions about your UVM Network ID (NetID). If you don't know what your NetID is, go to the
UVM People database and search for your name. Information about VPN can be found at the CIT site.
Instructions for installing:
- Download the VPN file to your Desktop.
- Double-click on the icon.
- A self-extractor window will appear. Click on "unzip".
- The files will be unzipped and will then automatically install. Accept all the defaults.
- You may need to reboot your computer at this time.
Instructions for running:
- Dial in to the Internet using your regular ISP.
- Locate the VPN program using the Start button. Start/Programs/UVM VPN Client/Secure Network Access.
- When the VPN window opens, click on "Connect". Accept all the defaults.
- You will be prompted to enter your UVM NetID and password.
- Once the client is loaded, you can search the library web site as if you were on campus, gaining access to all the restricted databases.
