Abstract:
One of the major challenges facing the transportation engineer of today is to increase the capacity of our transportation infrastructure without adding new roads. Many engineers are using an aspect of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), specifically the use of variable message signs (VMS), to divert traffic away from incident locations and thus use the available capacity of the road network more efficiently. There are many factors that have an impact on the benefits of using VMS to divert traffic. These factors include the severity, location and duration of incident, as well as the relative demands and capacities of the main and detour routes. These factors make it difficult to predict the benefits of VMS deployment. This thesis will focus on the development of a case-based reasoning system to predict the impact of variable message sign deployment.
