Recommended Search Mode For most effective searching, choose Advanced Search.
Truncation or Wildcard * serves as a substitute for one or several characters within a word or at the end of a word or root word.
Example: employ* [finds records containing employ, employee, employer, employed, employable, employment]

? serves as a substitute for a single character within a word or at the end of a word.
Example: wind? [finds records containing wind, winds, windy]
Connectors and finds records that contain both terms. [narrows a search]
Example: habitat and management

or finds records that contain either or both terms. [broadens a search ]
Example: wetland or swamp

not finds records that contain one term but not another. [narrows a search]
Example: mouse not computer

adj finds records that contain both terms in the same order as you typed them. You may add a number after the "adj" to indicate the number of words that may appear between the search terms.
Example: mountain adj lion
Example: campaign adj5 contributions

near finds records that contain both terms in the same or reverse order of your search statement. You may add a number after the "near" to indicate the number of words that may appear between the search terms.
Example: bilingual near education
Example: political near3 elections

<, >, <=, >=, to, or thru specifies a numerical or alphanumeric range.
Example: >=1985 [in "Publication Year" search box finds dates from 1985 to the present]

Note: If you enter search terms with no Connector, NISC searches the words as if you had used near.
Nesting Use parentheses ( ) to group words and indicate the order of processing. Search terms and Connectors within parentheses are processed separately as a unit and then combined with the remaining search strategy.
Example: (civil or human) and rights
Field Searching Type search terms and Connectors in the search boxes that correspond to the parts of the record you wish to search. For help in searching a particular field, click on the question mark ? next to the field name.

Note: Enter keywords in the "Subject Search" box to simultaneously search the most commonly queried fields, e.g., Title, Abstract, Notes, Subject, and Key Terms.
Controlled Vocabulary (Subject Headings) Use "Index Terms" search box; click on the I symbol to browse the index for relevant subject headings.
Limits Use field searching.
Displaying Records Use the "Change Display Format" pull-down menu to choose the desired display format (e.g., citations or full records with abstracts). You may change the display of all records or just those you have marked.
E-Mailing Records First mark the records you want to e-mail by clicking in the boxes to the left of the records. Then complete the box at the bottom of the screen to send either citations or full records.
Printing Records First mark the records you want to print by clicking in the boxes to the left of the records. Then use the "Change Print/Save" pull-down menu to choose the desired format (e.g., citation, full record) and click Go. Use your Web browser to print. (Select File from the browser's menu bar, and choose Print.)
Saving Records to Disk First mark the records you want to save by clicking in the boxes to the left of the records. Then use the "Change Print/Save" pull-down menu to choose the desired format (e.g., citation, full record) and click Go. Use your Web browser to save to disk. (Select File from the browser's menu bar, and choose Save As. When naming the file, save it as a text file using .txt as the file extension.)
