Gender Watch Search Guide

Connect to Gender Watch About Database
Recommended Search Mode "Words in Articles" search (search for articles by matching words that occur in the text) and/or "More search criteria" (search by field).
Truncation or Wildcard * serves as a substitute for one or several characters at the beginning, within, or at the end of a word or root word.
Example: herb* [finds records containing herb, herbs, herbal, herbalist, herbarium, herbicide, etc.]

? serves as a substitute for a single character within or at the end of a word.
Example: wind? [finds records containing wind, winds, windy]
Connectors and finds records that contain both terms. [narrows a search]
Example: segregation and boston

or finds records that contain either or both terms. [broadens a search]
Example: native or indigenous

not finds records that contain one term but not another. [narrows a search]
Example: inuit not alaska

adj finds records that contain both terms in the order you typed them (adjacent to each other). You may add a number after the "adj" to indicate the number of words that may appear between the search terms.
Example: navajo adj reservation
Example: corn adj5 harvest

near finds records that contain both terms in the same or reverse order of your search statement. You may add a number after the "near" to indicate the number of words that may appear between the search terms.
Example: midwifery near childbirth
Example: childbirth near5 natural

<, >, <=, >=, to, or . . . specifies a numerical or alphanumeric range.
Example: >=1990 [in Publication Date search box finds publications after 1990]

Note: If you enter search terms with no Connector, Softline searches the words as if you had used and.
Nesting Use parentheses ( ) to group words and indicate the order of processing. Search terms and Connectors with parentheses are processed separately as a unit and then combined with the remaining search strategy.
Example: (wom?n or female) and osteoporosis
Field Searching Type search terms and Connectors in search boxes for the parts of the record you wish to search. Click on the field name to the left of the box to browse and select terms.
Controlled Vocabulary (Subject Headings) Use field indexes: click on name of field (e.g., Subject(s) or Publcation Name) (fields vary among databases), to view and select relevant terms.
Limits See field searching.
Displaying Records To view a single record, click the hyperlink. You will get the full text of the article, with your search terms highlighted in red.
E-Mailing Records Not available.
Printing Records First mark the records you want to print by clicking in the boxes on the left in the titles list. Then click PRINT/EXPORT, and choose the information you want included. Click OK. You will see the text version that is sent to the printer. Use your Web browser to print. (Select File from the browser's menu bar, and choose Print.)
Saving Records to Disk First mark the records you want to save by clicking in the boxes on the left in the titles list. Then click PRINT/EXPORT, and choose the information you want included. Click OK. You will see the text version that will be downloaded. Use your Web browser to save. ( Select File from the browser's menu bar, and choose Save As. When naming the file, save it as a text file, using .txt as the file extension.)
Special Icons and Commands Click Results Tally on the search screen if you wish to see a numerical result of your search.
