To search for magazine, journal, and newspaper articles, use the "Free Text" search box.
Note: This guide will help you search for articles. For company or industry searches, please consult a librarian. |
| Truncation or Wildcard |
* substitutes for one or several characters at the end of a word or root word. Example: market* [finds records containing market, markets, marketing, marketer, marketed] $n finds words with multiple endings up to a certain number of characters (1-9). Example: earn$4 [finds records containing earn, earns, earner, earners, earning, earnings] ? substitutes for a single character within a word, to find words that are spelled differently by one letter. Example: organi?ation [finds records containing organization, organisation] |
| Connectors |
and finds records that contain both terms. [ narrows a search] Example: fidelity and fund or finds records that contain either or both terms. [broadens a search] Example: exxon or chevron not finds records that contain one term but not another. [narrows a search] Example: market not stock adj finds records that contain both terms in the same order as you typed them. To indicate that the second term must be within a certain number of words of the first term, add a number (1-10) after the adj. Example: computer adj virus Example: fcc adj6 regulations nearn finds records that contain both terms in the same or reverse order of your search statement. You must add a number (1-500) after the near to indicate the number of words that may appear between the search terms. Example: market near3 share same finds records that contain both terms in the same paragraph. atleastn finds records that contain a minimum number of references to the search term. You must add a number (1-50) after the atleast to indicate the number of times the search term must appear. Example: atleast5 microsoft Note: If you enter search terms with no connector, Factiva searches the words as if you had used adj. |
| Nesting |
Use parentheses ( ) to group words and indicate the order of
processing. Search terms and operators within parentheses are
processed separately as a unit and then combined with the remaining
search strategy. Example: budget and (deficit or shortfall) |
| Field Searching |
To the right of the "Free Text" search box, use the drop-down menu labeled "Search for free-text terms in:" to indicate the part of the record you want to search. The option you select applies to the entire search statement.
You can also restrict parts of your search using the following codes in your search statement. These apply only to the parts of the search statement where they are entered. HD= Headline HL= Headline group, including the section, column, and headline fields BY=Author, or byline, of the story PG=Page on which document appeared SN=Source (publication) name LP=First two paragraphs of the story TD=Text of the article Note: For additional codes, consult the online help. Example: SN=wall street journal and HL=greenspan [finds records from the Wall Street Journal that mention Greenspan in the headline] |
| Controlled Vocabulary (Subject Headings) |
You can search for articles by using Factiva's "Intelligent Indexing." At the left of the main search screen, click Look up. Type a term in the search box that appears. In the drop-down menu to the right, select Company, Industry, Region, or Subject. Click Look up. Then click on the desired term to paste it into the "Indexing" search box below. |
| Limits | You can limit your search to a date or period of time, and also to a list of selected publications. To create a list of selected publications, click Source Browser or Source Lookup. |

| E-Mailing Records |
To e-mail a single record, click on the headline to see the full record. Then click the envelope icon at the top left.
To e-mail more than one record, click in the box to the left of the headline for each article you want to send. Then click the envelope icon at the top left. |

To print a single record, click on the headline to see the full record. Then click the printer icon at the top left.

| Special Icons and Commands | Click the plus (+) icon labeled "More Search Options" at the bottom of the screen to change the way results are sorted or to exclude republished news. |
