Who is a Distance Education Patron?

Distance education patrons live outside of Chittenden County, do not come to campus, or are enrolled in either an online or offsite University of Vermont classes or only come to campus monthly.

Many Interlibrary loan /document delivery services are available for faculty on sabbatical leave, as well as for currently enrolled students who are away from campus for internships, independent study projects, semesters abroad, or doctoral research.

How do I order material?

Place requests using your ILLiad account.

Important: You must indicate in the field that you are a distance learner or out of the state/country in the note field or your request may be delayed.

How long does it take for material to arrive?

Articles/book chapters can be sent electronically. An email is sent when the article is ready for viewing. Login to your ILLiad account to access the article. If the item is owned by the UVM libraries it will be sent to you within 1-3 business days. If an item must be ordered through ILL, it usually takes 2-5 business days. Obscure publications can take longer to obtain if not owned by UVM.

For Patrons in the U.S. Only:
Books owned by the UVM libraries that are “available” are checked out to your library account and shipped to you via first class mail and should arrive within 3-5 days.

Books not owned by the UVM Libraries can take 1-3 weeks to reach our offices. Upon receipt here at UVM they will then be sent to your home address. You can login to your ILLiad account to check the status of your requests.

Can material be renewed?

You may renew any regularly circulating item from UVM libraries, provided another borrower has not placed a hold or recall on it. You can renew your books online at the Patron Information Page, as long as none of your books are overdue. Renewal requests for Interlibrary Loan material must be placed through your ILLiad account. Renewals are at the discretion of the lending library. If a book indicates “no renewals” on the information band then it cannot be renewed and must be used within the allotted time.

Is there a charge for this service?

Currently there is no fee for this service.

How do I return materials that I borrowed?

UVM and ILL material is sent with return postage paid. Simply use the same mailer and attach the pre-paid postage.
