Guides to Media Collections

FAQs

Does the library own Books on Tape?
We have a small collection of books on tape. These consist primarily of authors reading abridged versions of some of their novels, or readings of short stories or works of poetry. There are also a number of interviews with authors. We don't have books on CD.

May I make a copy of this video/CD/audiotape?
Due to copyright restrictions, duplicating materials for personal use is prohibited. You are allowed to copy a limited percentage of a media item for educational purposes, such as using it for a class presentation.

What do "on order" and "in process" mean when I see them listed in the Online Catalog?
These terms refer to the status of a media item in the acquisitions process. "On order" means that the item has been ordered for purchase but has not yet been received. "In Process" means the item is in the library, but in the process of being cataloged for Media Collections. If an item is marked "In Process," you can speed the item along by asking at the Media Collections Desk or Reference Desk that it be rush cataloged.

May I make a request that a film/sound recording to be added to the collection?
Yes. Click on the "Recommend Media for Purchase" button on the right side of this page.

Can you take materials out of the library or do you need to view them here?
If an item has been placed "on reserve" for a course, it can only be viewed at Media Resources. All other times, it may be charged out to those with a current UVM I.D. card. For non-UVM patrons, many visual materials may be viewed in house, and all sound recordings can be listened to in-house. More on circulation policies

What is your policy regarding loaning media materials to other schools and libraries in Vermont?
To use our video materials in your school or library, it will be necessary to make an interlibrary loan request through your library. Our Interlibrary Loan Department will then notify us and, depending on the video/DVD circulation status (it must have a circulation designation of "full circulation" status for us to lend it), we would loan the item to your library, generally for two weeks. You may request 2 items at a time.

Do you have recently released movies on video?
We purchase very recently released movies if requested by a faculty member for use in a course or program. However, unlike a video store, we don't have a mandate to acquire newly released films.

Is it possible to renew media materials on-line?
No. It's necessary to bring your materials in to the Media Collections Desk for renewal.
