Cries and Whispers = Viskningar och Rop (1972) DVD 1588, VID 6207 Tells the story of three sisters, one of whom is dying of cancer, and their housekeeper all of whom are searching for sprirtual peace in a world that seems to offer only disorder and despair. In Swedish with English subtitles (95 min.). Fanny and Alexander (1983) VID 4939 Part comedy and part ghost story, the film, set in a rural Swedish town in 1907, tells the story of one year in the lives of the colorful Ekdahl family. In Swedish with English subtitles (197 min.). Light Keeps Me Company = Ljuset Håller Mig sällskap (2000) VID 7429 An exploration of the life and work of cinematographer Sven Nykvist [who frequently worked with Bergman], told largely by Nykvist himself. The film includes numerous clips from films Nykvist photographed or directed and interviews with his colleagues, including Ingmar Bergman, Sir Richard Attenborough, Liv Ullman, Stellan Skarsgård, Woody Allen, Bibi Andersson, Vilmos Zsigmond and many others. Directed by Carl-Gustaf Nykvist. In Swedish and English with English subtitles (76 min.). The Magic Flute = Die Zauberflöte = Trollflögten (1975) VID 17, DVD 680 A handsome young man is enlisted to rescue the Queen of the Night's daughter from an evil sorcerer. Opera ; performed in Swedish with English subtitles (134 min.). Making of Fanny and Alexander (1990) VID 4608 Ingmar Bergman wrote and directed this fascinating documentary on the making of his 1983 feature film, Fanny and Alexander. Persona (1966) VID 4479, VIDR 189 A famous actress is stricken with pyschosomatic dumbness and is placed under a nurse's care in an isolated house, where the two gradually assume each other's personalities. In Swedish with English subtitles. (134 min.). Riten (1969) VID 3044 A Kafka-esque drama, about three actors accused of performing an obscene variety show. In a brutal inquisition, a sadistic judge exposes the neuroses of each troup member. More than a parable on censorship, this complex story focuses on how the trauma affects the players. In Swedish with English subtitles (75 min.). Seventh Seal = Sjunde Inseglet (1956) DVD 674, VIDR 34 In medieval Sweden a knight returns from war only to find a ravaged homeland. He meets up with a group of travelling players and eventually confronts the embodiment of death with whom he engages in a game of chess for his life. The knight and Death play as the cultural turmoil envelopes the people around them as they try, in different ways, to deal with the upheaval the plague has caused. Through a Glass Darkly (1961) VID 4478 "Four-character drama about just-released mental patient, her husband, her father and her younger brother who spend summer together on secluded island ... Victor Sjöström : a Portrait (1990) VID 4612 Traces Sjöström's career as actor and director from his entry into the film world in 1912 to his work in America and his return to Sweden. Virgin Spring (1959) VID 3048 A devout girl is raped and murdered by herders on her way to church. When her attackers seek shelter at her home, their crime is discovered and a bloody vengeance exacted. In Swedish with English subtitles (88 min.). Wild Strawberries = Smultronstället (1957) DVD 1597, VID 4477, VIDR 63 A distinguished professor emeritus who lives alone with his housekeeper can only come to terms with his egocentricity by traveling back in time to his earliest youth, finding there the seeds of his failure as husband, lover, father. This film deals with the phenomena of old age wherein childhood memories return with ever-increasing clarity while great stretches of the prime of life vanish into obscurity.
